Aït Benhaddou

The mudbrick castle from a picture book

The ksar of Aït Benhaddou is an entire fortified mudbrick town of towers and battlements, a UNESCO World Heritage site barely changed for centuries — and for that reason a backdrop for films from „Lawrence of Arabia“ to „Game of Thrones.“ A few families still live within the walls; most moved long ago to the new village on the opposite riverbank. In the morning light, the rammed earth turns a gold that no photo quite captures.
