Laâyoune

Where Morocco reaches furthest

Laâyoune (El Aaiún) is the largest city in the Moroccan Sahara and the administrative seat of these southern provinces of Morocco. The pink Moulay Abdelaziz Mosque with its tall minaret defines the center, surrounded by wide, young avenues and plenty of desert light. A place that feels more like an administrative capital than a historic medina — and for that very reason offers an honest glimpse into the region.
