Meknes

The quiet sister of Fez

In the 17th century, Sultan Moulay Ismail set out to build a Versailles of North Africa and left behind a city of oversized gates and more than 25 kilometres of mudbrick wall. Through the monumental Bab Mansour, decorated with green zellige mosaics and Quranic verses, you enter a medina that feels noticeably calmer than those of Fez or Marrakech — and precisely for that reason becomes a quiet favorite for many travelers.
