Asilah

Open-air gallery behind white ramparts

Within 15th-century Portuguese ramparts, Asilah is one of Morocco's most tranquil coastal towns — whitewashed lanes, blue door frames and, since an annual arts festival launched in the 1970s, large murals on almost every façade. In summer the town turns into an open gallery; the rest of the year it stays quietly low-key.
