Safi

Morocco's pottery capital

Safi has been known for its pottery for centuries: in the potters' quarter above the town, workshops line up where clay is turned into brightly glazed ceramics using traditional techniques. The town itself lives off fishing — its harbour is one of Morocco's largest sardine ports — and, unlike the tourist towns further south, feels pleasantly down-to-earth.
